Mention “The Box of Delights” to boys and girls of a certain age and a wry, happy smile will surely follow. I’m with The Guardian’s blog on this (despite my comment there about ease of reading): John Masefield‘s book should be up there with A Christmas Carol. And in my perfect world the 1984 TV series, which is the reason for most of the smiles, would be repeated every year.
And, apparently John Masefield didn’t want the “and it was all a dream” ending. Blame his publisher. Or his wife. (See the final answer here for possibilities).
Here’s the beginning of the TV series. The wolves are running.
