Evgenia Arbugaeva is probably not that impressed that BAA can’t open the Heathrow runways some 72 hours after a dumping of snow but then she’s a native Siberian who has been following and photographing reindeer herders and apparently they have to cope with a bit of winter there from time to time.
The lives of these nomadic Siberians as captured by Arbugaeva is simple, tough, beautiful and unforgiving. Her incredible record has just been rewarded by winning blurb.com’s book of the year. The photos on her website are an interesting mix of context shots showing the remote landscape, alongside both formal portraits and captures of life both at work and at rest. There’s also some more background and a slideshow on the excellent lensculture website.
