Ahhh, the beautiful game … but as we’re saving rugby league for another 365 soccer will do for today. And, no, soccer isn’t an americanism any more than afternoon cream tea is – only cretinous radio phone-in dimwits with no memory of Shoot Soccer Annuals think that. But soccer has been a part of my life since October 1982 when I watched Bury draw 0-0 with Swindon Town in what was then called Division 4. I’ve been to well over 500 matches now although I stopped counting a decade ago and am now settled into life as a beer-money sports photographer for the Bucks Examiner / Advertiser.
See this photo of the welcome sign at Chesham United here and there would be an almost-related clip here from shockingly wonderful awesomely awful football film Yesterday’s Hero but sadly the internet cannot oblige. I can only assume all tapes and records of it have been wiped.
