The wisdom has it that champion teams play badly and win – and teams at the top get the benefit of the doubts in referees’ minds. Both pieces of knowledge were in evidence at Mill Meadow yesterday as Chalfont St Peter recorded the first of the wins that will see them finally take the Spartan South Midlands title after several years of challenging. It wasn’t a great game. Chalfont were disjointed and the refereeing was harsh (though not as the visiting fans had it, biased) … but close to the death the hosts edged past their visitors thanks to a very scrappy goal. Like I say, the form of champions.
