Drinking of England by Peter Dench

Always nice to come across something you missed and thanks to the good folk at lensculture I’m now enjoying the slideshow of Peter Dench’s Parr-esque “Drinking of England”. As a series it gets across just how pervasive booze is to the English – from laughing old gents clutching a little glass of red to teenagers necking a litre of cider. There’s less potential sneering than you get with Martin Parr but it’s also a long way short of ‘affectionate’ and you do find yourself wondering, “Wouldn’t it be nice to sit down with a coffee once in a while?”
