Next year Hemel Stags will be playing the ridiculously named Cooperative Championship 1 which is, for those not in the know, the third tier of rugby league in the UK behind Super League and the Championship. This year they are in the slightly less ridiculously named National Conference League Division Three and today they welcomed South Wales Hornets to Pennine Way. The Hornets are so named because they act as a development team to the South Wales Scorpions and the Scorpions have that name because it was suggested on an internet thread when the nascent club was seeking ideas for nicknames. My suggestion – the Mighty Love Gods – did not make the shortlist.
